1.
WAKE 01:54
Half asleep Feeling weightless now Taking deep breaths exhaling clouds Cancel all the plans that we made tonight My room has now opened very wide Contemplating breath Angel by my side Giving me the sense Of a changing tide When the morning comes The light, the light When you’ve found the one the light, the light Spend some time my son the light, in the light We all breathe grey at times the light, but the light Will shine
2.
Tales 03:39 video
We never turn around Quite so many times ‘Til we have a tale to tell Trips and appetites Filled so many needs A beautiful searching tendency Someone had arrived Breathing, Needing Looking us deep in the eyes Told us of our tales Good, bad and otherwise Giving grace to a varied ride What it taught me I repeat with pride I will always Take that ride I will take the time I will give the time
3.
The Zone 03:56
I used to want to disappear completely Now I want to disappear, completely Taking with me nothing that is needed Leaving all the love I have been given You feed the beast And then it comes alive You feed the beast And then it comes alive In time You prune the leaves And then it comes alive You prune the leaves And then it comes alive In time We used to want to disappear completely (Adorned with all the points we have been given) Now we want to disappear, completely (Laying in a box covered in glitter) You feed the beast And then it comes alive You feed the beast And then it comes alive In time You prune the leaves And then it comes alive You prune the leaves And then it comes alive In time
4.
Hoping that we’ll leave some time to pray To the Gods of cutting through the grey Existential thoughts can wait another day (Where were you, where are you) Sleeping more and more throughout the day To see the constellations, light the way When the brightest city lights lead you astray (Tell the truth, you’re the truth) I found my home In the belly of song The stars have shown What the body already knows Where there’s an end A beginning can grow So I’ll cast my stone At the center of every throne Take comfort in all of the days May they give you some sense of grace When I’ll see you, I cannot say But you’ll find me under the waves you’ll find me under the waves you’ll find me under the waves you’ll find me under the waves you’ll find me under the waves

about

Drew Silverman, perhaps best known as the hard-hitting drummer backing pop outfit Shy Beast, caps a prolific run of releases as Silver Tapes with Forever Home, the best example to date of the project’s electro-ambient noir-pop aesthetic.

From a bedroom studio in south Austin, Silverman plotted this intricately arranged mini-album while taking care of his one-year-old son Isaac (credited as “assistant engineer”). Vocals were produced by Danny Reisch at Good Danny’s, with an expansive mix baked by Max Lorenzen at Rare Ear and Mastering handled by Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering. A few trusted collaborators added guitar and percussion flourishes.

A well-curated approach to genre hopping pervades. The percolating textures and lo-fi vocals of opening fragment “Wake” reveal a warm affinity for nostalgia-tinged bedroom pop. Nods to Scott Walker’s late period abound, the former’s baroque mannerisms bleakened by Silverman’s flat affect.

The overall atmosphere mines glassy eighties sophistipop, all jazzy tonality and lovelorn sentiment, but curdled into something dark and isolated, crescendos of noise surfacing like wraiths. The breadth and balance of tones is impressive, nodding to Nine Inch Nails’ magnum opus The Fragile in the surreally shifting nightscapes of “The Zone.”

None of which is to say that the EP isn’t intensely catchy. Single “Tales” weaves a shimmering tapestry of orchestral pop until a buzzy shoegaze riff crashes in halfway through. Fat ear-worm hooks writhe inside the gauzy guitar walls of closer “Constellations Will Light The Way,” bolstered by a perfectly pummeling death metal drum gallop.

Themes of nostalgia, security, and loss pervade, even in the sunnier moments. “We never turn around / quite so many times,” Silverman croons on “Tales.” A potent vibe check, although perhaps the most compelling vocals are the wordless exhortations echoing from the song’s final section.

Absorbing Silver Tapes’ vision over these crisp 15 minutes leaves little doubt that its creator has absorbed the anxiety of the times. Still, Forever Home reverberates as a trip-hop down the rabbit hole of sonic catharsis, clearing space for better times ahead.

Welcome home.
